Mechanical Back Pain:
- Typically these are patients with back pain as the result of some form of chronic spinal instability.
- Establishment of a cause and effect relationship between the back pain and chronic spinal instability is a complex matter and subject to much theoretical and clinical debate.
- Dysfunctional motion segment and Discogenic pain fall into this category.
- The lack of objectivity makes the diagnosis of dysfunctional segment motion controversial and at times, subject to misuse and abuse and resultant unnecessary spinal fusion and instrumentations.
