Conservative Therapy for Lumbar Disk Disease:

  • Includes NSAIDs, opiates, steroid injections, physical therapy, and lumbar traction.

  • Greater than 85% of patients with acute lumbar disk herniation may recover without surgery.

  • If no improvement occurs in 6 weeks, surgery can be considered depending on the degree of pain.

  • Progressive motor deficit, uncontrollable pain, or cauda equina syndrome are indications for early surgery.
